Homemade Box Plait Dog Tug Toy

This fleece tug toy requires no sewing and has a four way box plait which seems to suit the tougher chewing dogs. I have made a few of these for dogs of all ages, breeds (Labrador, Terriers, Jack Russell, Cockapoo, Poodle) and playful puppies, and they seem to last longer than other tug toys.

You will need:
Fleece (cut into 4 strips approximately 3-4 Inches wide by 50 Inches long)
Scissor
Ruler or Tape Measure

How to make:
1. Cut and lay the 4 strips of fleece side by side and tie a really tight knot at the top of your strips.

2. Now lay the four pieces of fleece out to look like a cross.

Tip: I hold the knot in my knees and then this way the fleece pieces stay in position. I find it easier to continue plaiting when holding the fleece securely as it prevents movement in the plait and is easier to retain the cross position too.

3. Fold the top piece down, and the bottom piece of fleece up loosely.

4. This is the tricky bit, now take the piece on the right and weave it through the top and bottom piece, then take the piece on the left and weave it through the top and bottom piece.

5. Pull the pieces tightly and you will make a box type plait.

6. Continue to box plait your fleece until the toy is your desired length of your dog.

7. Now tie a tight knot where you finish plaiting, but remember to leave some fleece tails as these make the toy more fun and many dogs like to hold these tails during play.

8. Trim and tidy the ends of the fleece to your desired length.

9. Check that both knots are secure for your dog and then let him/her play with it.

Homemade Plaited Fleece Tug Toy for Puppies & Dogs

These homemade tugs toys require no sewing and are fairly simple to make. They are strong enough for playful puppies and adult dogs to tug on, but for the tougher pullers and chewers I have another stronger homemade tug toy coming soon :)

You will need:

  • Fleece Material (cut into 3 strips approximately 3 Inches wide by your desired length)
  • Scissor
  • Ruler or Tape Measure

How to make:
1. Lay the strips of fleece side by side.

2. From the middle of the strips plait approximately 8-10 inches of the material.

3. Now fold the fleece strips in half so that the plaited section makes a loop.
Make a loop

4. You may like to match up the colours if you are using 3 different colours for your tug toy. From the loop you need to create 3 sections with 2 pieces of fleece per section.

5. Now continue plaiting the 3 sections tightly until you get closer to the end.

6. Finish the tug toy off with a tight knot. It is always nice to leave some tails as this makes the toy more fun for your dog. The ends may need trimming to create a neater finish or you may like to tie knots in each of the tails.

7. Really pull on the knot from all directions to makes sure it is strong and tight enough for your dog/puppy to pull.

8. Now see if your dog or puppy likes his/her new homemade tug toy.

It is important for owners to always supervise their dog when playing with toys and to check the toys for safety too. Keep the knots tight and replace the toy if it becomes damaged through play :)

Double Cheese Dog Treats

I haven’t baked a new doggy recipe for a while, so thought it may be nice to spoil my pack with some new tasty cheesy dog treats for a special occasion.

Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: Approximately 25 minutes

Ingredients that you will need:
•    100g Grated Cheddar Cheese
•    50g Grated Parmesan
•    25g Softened Butter/Margarine
•    100g Flour
•    8-10 Tablespoons Milk

How to make them:
1. Preheat your oven to 180oC or Gas Mark 4.

2. Grate the two types of cheese if not already grated.

3. Mix all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl.

4. Make the mixture into small ball or biscuits shapes then place onto a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper. Using these quantities of ingredients you should be able to make approximately 11-12 flat biscuit shapes or 30 smaller ball shaped treats.

5. Bake the double cheese doggy treats in the oven for approximately 20-30 minutes depending on the size of the treats. They are ready to remove from the oven when they are a golden cheesy colour. I made them as flat biscuit shapes, but as they are quite gooey I would make them in small ball shapes next time.

6. Leave them to cool.

7. You can store them in a container until it is your dogs treat time.

Us humans did sample these biscuits as they smelt so wonderful whilst baking and with some sugar added they would be rather nice for human consumption, although without the sugar or honey they are definitely a treat for the dog :) I can’t believe we tested the doggy biscuits!
